Birthdays are recognized during the school year and if your child has a summer birthday I recognize those at the end of our school year. Please do not send birthday invitations to be distributed at school unless all children are receiving an invitation. I encourage invitation distribution outside of the school environment. Thank you for your consideration.
Book order forms for you and your child to look over will be sent home periodically. Book clubs offer books at reduced prices and it is your option to order or not. It is a great way to build your child’s home library and encourage reading skills.
Buddies: We have 4th grade reading buddies. We do a reading program with them each week for ½ hour.
Conferences: Parent/teacher conferences are held twice a year. Watch for information and reply accordingly.
Communication is essential. Feel free to contact me whenever you have a question or concern. You can reach me by phone (920)693-8241, in person, by email: [email protected], our class website which is http://hangingwithmrscooper.weebly.com , or by note.

Room parents will contact you for needed supplies and assistance as the dates near.
Centers: Children learn through play. During center time they are learning: to get along with others, self-expression and accomplishment, use of language, and the world around them. Children play in many ways. They play independently, parallel, and cooperatively. Play is not only fun but serious business. Centers provide a time for children to work on needed skills at his or her own level or pace. Center time is provided daily.
Clothing: Please send a spare pair of clothes for your child to keep in their lockers in case of an emergency.
CAFÉ: is an acronym that stand for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding vocabulary. These become our reading goals and we use various strategies that are specific to our individual needs to reach these goals.
Discipline: is simple: We work hard as a class thus the classroom is a positive and safe place for everyone. I send home, at the beginning of each year, our classroom rules—please review them with your child and sign the slip and return it to me within the first week of school.
Daily Schedule: Our daily schedule will be coming home in your child’s Friday folder in the first week or so. Activities on our schedule include but are not limited to: morning routines, journaling, shared reading/writing, centers, library, art, gym, computers, math, science, guidance, music, language arts, and social studies.

Also, please use the doors on the east side of the building. Please keep in mind that we do leave our classroom 3-5 minutes earlier than the other grades to decrease the congestion in the hallway and to get them to the busses first.
E-mail address: My school email address is [email protected]. I check it daily. If you have an email address that you would like me to be aware of, please let me know. This is a good way of staying in touch.
Feel free to stop in the classroom. I have an open door policy and look forward to working with you this year.
Friday folders: Each Friday your child will be bringing home a Friday folder. This folder contains my weekly newsletter/concept page and other important information from the office. Your child will bring this folder home filled on Friday and is expected to bring it back empty on the following Monday.

Guidance: We have guidance class every other week for ½ hour.
Homework: Your child will have some homework in kindergarten. Assignments will vary and will be sent home with directions. Your child should read or be read to for at least 10 minutes a day.
Independence is a goal in my classroom because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence. Kindergarteners are very capable of doing many things on their own and I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom. To help your child you can work on the following skills at home: zipping, tying, buttoning, dressing, etc…
Journaling: Writing takes place everyday in kindergarten. One way we accomplish this is through our kindergarten journals.
Keep updated by reading the classroom newsletter that I send home weekly, and checking our web site http://hangingwithmrscooper. weebly.com.
Library: Our class will visit the library once a week. Your child will be able to check out a book when we visit the library and return it within the following week. If you child forgets to return the book, they will not be allowed to check out a new book until it is returned.
Lunch: Our class eats lunch at 11:15. Your hot lunch account is set up in the office and you will be notified when it needs to be replenished.
Learning centers are a time in the day for your child to experience opportunities for “free play”. These centers are utilized everyday and are self-selected by your child. Children learn through play and this is an important time, integral to the growth and development of each child.
Literacy: One of our focuses in kindergarten is to learn the letters of the alphabet and the sounds associated with them (phonemic awareness), we also learn some easy words that are known as ‘sight words’ that we put on our word wall in the classroom. Kindergarten reading is known as the emergent stage. Modeling and reinforcing help your child’s learning in language as well as in other behaviors. Our reading instruction will be both whole group (shared) and small group (guided). We will also learn how to write in kindergarten! It is a unique type of writing where they attempt to sound out the words and connect the sounds they hear and write them on paper. We call this ‘kid’ writing!
Music: Our class will have music class.
Math: The kindergarten math curriculum we use is Bridges. Our curriculum provides students with mathematical experiences that help them develop number sense and a positive attitude towards mathematics that will continue throughout their school career and lives. Also, many of our math concepts are covered through our daily calendar routine during circle time.
Money: On occasion it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school. Please send it in a sealed envelope with your child’s name on it and the purpose for the money.
Newsletter: A weekly newsletter will be sent home on Fridays, and posted on our kindergarten web site, to keep you informed about what is happening or will be happening in our classroom—please read it regularly to keep yourself informed of our classroom happenings.
Open house is held at the end of August. Watch for information from the school office. This is an opportunity to come and see the classrooms/school and bring your child’s supplies before the first day of school.
Outdoor fun: Children are outside before school, lunchtime recess, and 15 minute p.m. recess. Recess provides interaction, choice time, and large motor development. It is imperative that you dress your child properly for the ever-changing weather. Please keep in mind that if your child is healthy enough to come to school, they are well enough to go outside. Weather permitting we will be outside for every recess.
Pick Up: When picking up your child, please use the designated doors and parking area. If you are picking your child up during the school day, please check in at the office.
Questions?: Please feel free to call, stop in, email, or send a note. I will respond as soon as possible. My door is always open to you.
Report cards: are sent home quarterly. The first two will be handed out at conferences and the last two will come home in your child’s Friday folder.
Rest Time: Each day we have 20-30 minutes of quiet time. Research has shown that young children need unstructured, quiet time. I do not expect that your child will sleep, however, I occasionally have one or two that will fall asleep!
Science: The focus of our kindergarten science curriculum is Science Dimensions and Healthy Choices. We also develop an awareness of the world in which we live.
Social Studies: The focus of our kindergarten social studies curriculum focuses on the students and how they relate to others in their families, classroom, school, and community.
Transportation: If your child has any changes in their transportation, please let the office and me know in writing, by email, or phone. This is necessary as I will not be able to change any transportation issues without a parent consent.
Technology: In the classroom we have 1:1 i-Pads with educational apps, along with a Smart Board.
Unique: Our motto is—We are like a box of crayons—each of us unique but when we get together our classroom is complete!
Volunteers and visitors must register in the office and pick up a badge.
Family Vacations are wonderful learning opportunities for your family, however, please be sure to let me know that you are planning a vacation, so I can provide your child with a vacation journal so they can share their experiences with the class when they return.
Wet and/or dirty clothes can be uncomfortable for your child. Please send an extra set of clothing (shirt, pants, socks, underclothes) in a baggie marked with your child’s name on the outside of the bag, that will be kept in your child’s locker and used by your child in the event they are needed.
Web page: Our class web page is up and running—you can find it at http://hangingwithmrscooper.weebly.com.
X--Parents and family members are to eXit and enter via the main school entry during school hours. Remember to sign in and out in the office and get your visitor badge.
You are very important in your child’s education, therefore your ideas and suggestions are always welcome.
Zzzzzzzz—Make sure your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give your child for a great first all-day school experience.
LETS HAVE A GREAT YEAR TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!
